[인터뷰] 한국 지오캐시 리뷰어인 Erik과 서면 인터뷰

이번에 에릭이 한국 캐셔들과의 인터뷰를 하게 되었습니다. 그에 대한 질의문을

Would you tell us where you live In?  
First, I am honored to be asked these questions, and flattered by your interest.
 
I live in the small town of Suwannee, which is in the US state of Georgia, slightly north of the larger town of Atlanta.

In Facebook, Your own profile show a wonderful beard man, is that photo a yourself?
Yes, that is me.   Although some might not say I’m wonderful.  ;)

If you can say, Would you tell us your age?
I’m 29, though I look old for my age.   I’m just joking.  I’m actually twice that age.
 
Would you say Where or not married? if married, would you tell us your family.
members?

I have been married for 26 years to a wonderful woman named Carol.  I have a 25 year old son Alex, and a 21 year old daughter Catherine.

Do you like a alchol or smoking?

No smoking, but I like a glass of wine with dinner, or a beer on the weekend

Is there your own method to reduce a stress?

Hiking in the mountains is great, and if I can find a geocache there too that is even better.

Is there anything else your hobbies except geocaching?

Not currently.  In the past I always had passions instead of hobbies, and devoted much time and energy to each before finding something else.  So far geocaching has kept me interested for quite a long time.  J
 
 
As A Geocacher
 
I know you are a Charter Member of Geocaching. When and How did you engage in
geocaching?

I started in February of 2001.  I was camping with a Boy Scout group and one of the other adult leaders mentioned the sport and said there was a cache nearby.   I did not have a GPS but spent about four hours looking for that cache using only a map.  I did not find it that day, but the next weekend purchased a GPS and started hunting geocaches the proper way.

What do you think the most charming point in geocaching?

Seeing new places that other people think are special enough to hide a geocache at.  Also meeting other geocachers.

Would you tell us the best episode during geocaching activities?

I very much enjoyed visiting South Africa last year, meeting the local geocachers, and finding geocaches in that very scenic country.   I currently enjoy hikes in the mountains to find one tough cache much more than than finding many easy caches in a town.

What do you think the best plan to go geocaching with family?

I think so, as long as the other family members also enjoy the sport or hobby.   My children usually did not, so it was best to not ask them to go along.   Sometimes on a trip in the car I would like to hunt geocaches, but if the children were along my son would sometimes jump out first, quickly find the cache, and then say “now we can continue our trip!”    We have a lot of local geocachers where I live you log caches as a family team, and that is great.  I enjoy seeing the small children open a cache to see what treasure it countains.

FTF are always one of the most debating topics within Geocachers, What is your opinion
about FTF?

Different people enjoy different things about geocaching, for different reasons.  For some it’s FTF, for others it is having a high total number of finds, for some it is having a high consecutive number of days that a cache has been found.   For me it is not being FTF, but I respect those that find it important.   As a cache reviewer I am usually not allowed to be FTF, as some might think I cheated by seeing the cache page before it was published.   I published a cache near my home a few years ago, and when three people could not find it I thought I should look for it.  I quickly found it, and was FTF.   I did not understand why three people could not find the easy cache, but the cache owner e-mailed me with a very embarrased confession:   He did not think his cache would be published so quickly so had not hidden it yet when he submitted it.  When he read the three DNF logs he thought he’d better quickly hide it.  Then a  half hour later I found it.  ;)
 
 
Do you have a special plan next year? especially like visiting a S.Korea.

I wish I could do that.  With the economy being slow I am not working in the industry that I spent the last 20+ years in,  so there isn’t the money for overseas vacations.  Hopefully that will change soon.   I grew up as a child in Hawaii, and always enjoyed the Korean foods and other influences there, so hopefully I can visit.

Have you ever been met jeremy irish in personal? or is there a regular meeting with
Reviewers and Geocaching Staffs?

I have met Jeremy many times, but we are not allowed to discuss our meetings.  ;)    We do communicate much more often via the internet than in person, of course.   Jeremy is very good about listening to reviewer input and working with us to make the sport as appealing to players as possible.

What is your GPSr using geocaching?

I currently use a Garmin 60CSx.  It is a great GPSr.  Prior to that for many, many years I used an old Garmin 12 Map.  It is almost an antique now.   I also have an Etrex Legend, but did not like it as much as the older Garmin, due to it’s smaller screen, and have only used it a few times.  Now that I have the 60CSx the others are loan to children when I teach a class about geocaching.
 
 
As A Reviewer
 
When did you take a task as Korean Geocaching Reviewer? and are there anything
difficult to burden you as korean Reviewer?

I started reviewing caches for all countries in December 2001.  Some countries now have their own local reviewers due to the high volumn of new cache submissions or local restrictions on our sport.   The only problem or burden for me as a reviewer of Korean caches is the language.  I have to use the online translation tools, and they are quite terrible.

Do you use a speical program to review and publish the listed geocaches? or only do you
read a cache description?

The cache reviewers mostly use Mozilla Firefox as a web browser, and there are some automated tools that work well to speed up our work.   It will tell us the common errors such as a cache too close to other caches.   We read the cache description to be sure there is not anything there that is commercial or asks people to do things that are illegal or against the geocaching.com guidelines.
 
Is there a speical manual that determines suitabilty of geocache in Reviewer? or is the
listig guideline a only determiner?  

Those listing guidelines are really all we use.  If there is a question the reviewers will normally ask the other reviewers what they think.  That also helps to ensure that our sport is the same all over the world, and that there are not reviewers that add their own rules.

I know you are reviewer of Asia and some other country. As reviewer, are there anything
special in korea geocahes, different from other countries?

No, not really.    I would rather not generalize, but there are always regional differences.   In northern European countries most geocaches are multistage.  For some reason people like complicated multistage caches there.  In Japan, and to a lesser extent in Korea, there seem to be more micro caches than larger cache containers.     Don’t tell the Europeans, but Asians seem to be much smarter when it comes to entering the correct coordinates.   I remember many European caches hidden east of the Prime Meridian that were mistakenly entered with a West Longitude.   That almost never happens in Asia.
 
 
As Reviewer, what do think the most important point in listing geocaches?

The most important thing for me is to find a way to list every cache.   It sometimes becomes a problem when someone on vacation hides one.  For example, a lot of northern Europeans go to Thailand on vacation and hide caches there.  I would like to publish their cache, but if they cannot find someone local to maintain it I cannot.    Our sport cannot grow if there are no caches to find, so it is important in “cache poor” countries to be flexible and allow caches to be published, but if someone says they placed the cache on their honeymoon and will never return what can you do.   I have to tell them that they should have thought of something else to do on their honeymoon.  ;)
 
For cache hiders the most important thing would be to have some experience finding caches before hiding one, as well as reading and understanding the geocaching.com guidelines.   Neither one seems to be a problem in Korea, and I thank you for translating those guidelines.
 
 
Would you think you will be a member of geocachingkorea in case you tell us your
opinion and thought directly?

I think language difficulties make it difficult for me to take full advantage of your website and organization.   I do enjoy looking at the site, and also of course enjoy looking at cache logs with pictures.  It is always nice to be able to associate a face with a geocaching name.

How will be a Reviewer? What conditions do the reviwer have?

Do you know any special plans that geocahcing.com have prepared ?

No, not really.  The site is always changing, and you saw some of that this week with the ability to add Korean provinces.   There are also always new things happening outside the geocaching.com website, like the ability to have the geocaching application on an iPhone.  Do you have the Apple iPhone in Korea?   I have one, and have found some caches with it.  I like the Garmin better, though.

Do you know the another Reviwer, Crow-T-Robot? is he a human or robot?

He is a machine.   I’m just joking.   He’s a nice guy.  I went geocaching with him once. He and I fight to be FTR  (“first to review”).   Not really.  Sometimes he gets to the new ones first, sometimes I do.  Occasionally we review the same cache at the same time.

Finally, would you tell me your comments to S.Korea Geocachers?

You all seem to be a great group.   I have enjoyed workng with you.    As our sport grows we inevitably get some “bad apples”:  people who steal caches,  hoard geocoins, write rude things in their cache logs, etc.   I have not seen that in ROK.   I think one reason is that you folks seem to get together regularly for events.   Then you get to know the other geocachers.  It is hard to be rude to someone online if you have been geocaching with them or had a beer together.   So keep doing what you’re doing!

* 사는곳은 어디입니까?  

   우선, 이런 인터뷰를 하게 되어서 영광으로 생각합니다. 당신들의 관심을 받고 있는 것이 저를 우쭐하게 만듭니다.

저는 조지아 주에 있는 Suwannee라고 하는 작은 소도시에 살고 있으며, 대도시인 Atlanta 보다 약간 북쪽에 있습니다.

* 페이스북에 있는 사진을 보면, 멋진 구렛나루 수염이 인상적인데, 실제 자신의 모습인가요?

네, 그것이 제 사진입니다. 하지만 아무도 그 수염보고 인상적이라고 하지는 않든데 ;)

* 실례가 되지 않은다면, 나이는 어떻게 되는가요?

네, 29살 입니다. 제가 나이에 비해 좀 늙어보이기는 합니다. 농담이구요 실제는 29살의 2배를 먹었습니다.

* 결혼은 했습니까?  하셨다면 가족은 어떻게 되시나요?  

Carol이라고 하는 아름다운 여성과 결혼한 지 26년이 지났네요. 25살인 아들 Alex가 있고 21살인 Catherine이 있습니다.

* 술. 담배도 즐기는가요?

담배는 피지 않습니다. 하지만 저녁에 와인 한잔 먹는 것을 좋아합니다. 그리고 가끔 주말에는 맥주도 한잔씩 합니다.

* 자신만의 스트레스 해소법이 있나요?

산악 자전거 타기를 좋아합니다. 그 곳에서 지오캐시를 발견한다면 더 할 나위없겠지요

* 지오캐싱 이외의 다른 취미는 없는가요?

현재는 뭐 특별한 것이 없네요. 과거에는 취미들 대신에 어떤 열정들을 가지고 있었습니다. 지오캐싱을 하기 전에는 많은 시간과 에너지를 그런 것들에 투자를 했습니다. 오랜 동안 지오캐싱이 저와 함께 했습니다.

As A Geocacher


* 공로회원으로 알고있는데, 언제부터 어떤 계기로 지오캐싱을 시작하게 되었는가요?

지 오캐싱을 시작한 것은 2001년 2월입니다. 보이스카웃 그룹과 함게 캠핑을 하고 있었는데, 다른 어른 지도자 중 한명이 이 스포츠에 대해서 언급을 했습니다. 그리고 근처에 캐시가 있다는 말을 하더군요. 그 당시 나는 GPS가 없어서 오로지 지도만 가지고 그 주변의 캐시를 4시간 동안 찾았었지요. 그날은 캐시를 찾지 못했습니다. 그러나 다음 주에 GPS를 하나 구입을 해서 올바른 방향으로 지오캐시들을 찾기 시작했답니다.

* 지오캐싱의 가장 큰 매력은 어떤 점이라고 보는가요?

다른 사람들이 이 장소는 정말 캐시를 숨기기 좋은 장소라고 하는 그 곳을 바라보는 것이라고 할 수 있겠지요. 물론 다른 캐셔들을 만나는 것도 좋은 점이라고 할 수 있습니다.

* 지오캐싱을 하면서 있었던 재미있는 에피소드 하나를 들려줄 수 있는가요?

지 난 해에, 남 아프리가를 방문했을 때가 아주 즐거웠습니다. 그 지역 사람들을 만났고 그 아름다운 나라에서 지오캐시를 발견했었습니다. 현재 저는 도심지에 많은 쉬운 캐시를 발견하는 것보다는 산악 자전거를 타고 힘든 캐시 하나를 발견하는 일을 더 좋아합니다.

* 가장 자주 동반하는 지오캐싱 메이트는 누구인가요?

제 아내입니다.

* 가정을 둔 사람들의  지혜로운 지오캐싱 여행 계획 짜는법은 있습니까?

내 생각도 그렇지만, 다른 많은 가족 구성원들이 이 스포츠 또는 취미를 즐기고 있습니다. 내 아이들은 그렇지 않아요. 그래서 아이들에게는 함께 가자고 하지 않는 것이 최선입니다. 가끔씩, 차로 여행을 할 때, 캐시를 찾고 싶을 때가 있습니다. 아들과 함께 손자?(children)이 있다면,  가끔 차에서 재빨리 벗어나 캐시를 빨리 찾은 다음 "계속 여해을 해야지"라고 말합니다. 내가 사는 곳에 있는 많은 캐셔들이 로그를 할 때, 가족 단위로 로그를 합니다. 멋진 일이지요. 저는 보물이 담겨져 있는 캐시를 보기위해 아주 어린아이들이 캐시 박스를 여는 것을 볼때가 기분 좋습니다.

* 지오캐싱의 요소 중의 하나이면서 항상 논란거리가 되는 FTF에 대해서 어떻게 생각을 하는가요?

서 로 다른 사람들이 지오캐싱의 서로 다른 면들을 서로 다른 이유에서 즐기고 있습니다. 어떤 사람은 FTF를 위해서, 또 다른 사람은 최고로 많이 찾는 것에 또 어떤 사람은 캐시를 찾는 그날 중에 가장 많이 찾아내기 등등 말입니다. 저는 FTF는 아닙니다. 그러나 but I respect those that find it important.   어떤 사람이 캐시가 퍼블리싱 되기도 전에 그 캐시 페이지를 보고 속였다고 생각할 때는 캐시 리뷰어로서 나는 종종 FTF를 허용하지 않을 때가 있습니다.
몇 년 전에 우리집 근처에 있는 캐시를 퍼블리싱한 적이 있습니다. 3명의 사람이 다녀갔는데도 DNF가 나서 내가 가서 찾아보아야겠다고 생각하고 쉽게 찾았는데  FTF였습니다. 3명의 사람이 왜 이렇게 쉬운 캐시도 못 찾았을까 의아해 했습니다. 그런데 캐시의 주인이 아주 당황스런 이메일을 보내오더군요. 자기의 캐시가 그렇게 빨리 퍼블리싱 될 줄 몰랐고 내가 승인할 때에도 숨기지 않은 상태였다고 합니다. 그가 3번의 DNF를 보고 나서야 빨리 숨겨야겠다고 생각했답니다. 내가 발견하기 30분 전이었다네요 ;)


* 내년 계획 중에 특별한 계획은 없는가요? 예를 들면 한국 방문 같은 것?

할 수만 있다면 그렇게 하고 싶습니다. 경기가 나빠져서 지난 20년간 일을 했던 직장에서 지금은 일이 없습니다. 그래서 해외로 나갈 만한 경제적 여건이 되지 못합니다. 바라건데 곧 이런 상황이 바뀌었으면 합니다. 난 하와이에서 어린 시절을 보냈습니다. 그곳에서 한국 음식과 다른 한국적 영향들을 좋아햇습니다. 할 수만 있다면 방문하고 싶습니다.

* Jeremy iris와는 개인적으로 만난 적이 있는가? 리뷰어와 스탭간의 직접적인 만남을 가지는가요?

Jerimy iris와는 자주 만났습니다. 그러나 우리의 만남의 내용을 이야기하는 것은 좋지 않을 것 같습니다. ;) 물론 우리는 다른 사람들 보다는 자주 인터넷을 통해서 서로 이야기합니다. Jeremy는 리뷰어가 하는  말을 아주 잘 경청합니다. 가능한 이 스포츠가 캐셔들에게 어필할 수 있게 만들기 위해 열심히 노력하고 있습니다.


* 캐셔로서 사용하고 있는 GPSr 기종은 어떤 것인가요?

현 재 저는 Garmin 60CSx 를 사용하고 있습니다. 대단한 기계지요. 그 전, 오랜 기간 동안 오래된 Garmin 12 Map을 사용했었습니다. 지금은 전설이 된 기계지요. Etrex Legend도 있기는 한데 오래된 가민 기계들 처럼 이것을 별로 좋아하지는 않습니다. 왜냐하면 스크린이 작기 때문입니다. 거의 사용하지 않은 것 같습니다. 지금은 나는  60CSX를 사용하고 다른 것은 지오캐싱에 관한 클래스에서 아이들을 가르칠 때 빌려 주는 용도로 쓰고 있습니다.

* 한국 리뷰어로 활동한 것은 언제부터이며, 한국 리뷰어로서 어려움은 없는가요?

2001 년 12월부터 전 세계의 캐시를 리뷰하는 역활을 시작했습니다. 지금 어떤 나라는 자신들만의 지역 리뷰어가 있습니다. 많은 양의 새로운 캐시를 승인하는 일 또는 우리 스포츠의 지역적 한계들 때문입니다. 한국의 리뷰어로서 가지는 유일한 부담은 언어이지요. 온라인에서 번역툴을 사용하고는 있지만, 번역툴은 꽤나 엉망이죠

* 캐시 리뷰할때 리스팅된 글만 보고 승인을 하는지 특별한 프로그램을 사용하는 것인지 궁금합니다.

캐 셔 리뷰어는 웹브라우져로서 모질라 파이어폭스를 대개 사용합니다. 그곳에는 우리의 일을 빨리 진행시켜 주기위한 자동화된 툴이 있습니다. 그것들이 캐시와 캐시사이의 거리가 너무 가깝다는 것 같은 일반적인 문제를 지적해 줍니다. 우리는 해당 캐시가 상업적인 목적이 있는지 사람들을 불법적인 일로 유도하는 무엇인가가 있는지 아니면 지오캐싱 가이드라인을 위반하는 사항이 있는지를 보기위해 캐시에 대한 설명을 읽습니다.

* 캐시 리뷰어만의 특별한 매뉴얼이 있는가 아니면, 리스팅 가이드라인만이 퍼블리싱의 기준이 되는가요?
리스팅 가이드라인이 우리가 사용하는 전부입니다. 만약 어떤 문제가 있다면, 리뷰어는 대개 또다른 리뷰에게 그들의 생각을 문의하고는 합니다. 이것이 우리의 스포츠가 전세계적으로 똑같은 이유가 되겠지요. 그들 자신의 룰을 추가하는 것은 리뷰어가 아닙니다.

* 한국뿐만 아니라 다른 지역들도 리뷰하는 것으로 알고 있는데, 한국만이 가지는 어떤 특징이 있어보이는가요?

없습니다. Not really(찐짜로? 사실은 특징이 있습니다?)  일 반화 시키기는 어렵지만, 항상 지역적인 차이들이 있습니다. 북유럽의 나라에서는 대개의 캐시들이 멀티 캐시들입니다. 여러가지 이유로 사람들이 복잡한 멀티 캐시를 좋아합니다. 일본에서는 그리고 한국에서도 아주 적은 빈도이기는 하기만 다소 큰 캐시 콘테이너보다는 마이크로가 더 많이 보입니다. 유럽 사람들에게는 이야기 하지 마십시요. 아시아 사람들이 더 똑똑한 지 정확한 좌표 입력이 더 잘 됩니다. 많은 유럽사람들이 기준 자오선 동쪽에 숨겨 놓고서는 서쪽에 숨겼다고 실수로 기입을 많이 합니다. 이것은 아시아 사람들에게서는 한번도  일어나지 않았습니다.

* 리뷰어의 관점에서 볼때, 리스팅할 때 제일 중요하게 생각하고 있는 항목은 어떤 것이 있는가요?

The most important thing for me is to find a way to list every cache. 종종 어떤 사람이 휴가 기간 중에 캐시를 숨기는 것이 문제가 되는 경우가 있습니다. 예를 들어, 많은 북유럽 사람들이 타이랜드로 휴가를 사거 그곳에 캐시들을 숨깁니다. 그런 캐시들을 대개는 승인을 해 주고 싶지만 만약 그들이 그 캐시를 관리해 줄 그 지역사람을 찾지 못했다면 저는 승인해 줄 수 없습니다. 우리의 스포츠는 그 곳에 발견할 만한 캐시가 없다면 발전하지 못할 겁니다. 따라서 캐시가 거의 없는 나라에 에 대새서는 유연하게  대응해서 캐시를 승인해 주는 편입니다. 그렇지만 만약 어떤 분이 캐시를 허니문 기간에 숨겼다고 말하고 다시 갈 계획이 없다고 할 때는 어떻게 하겠습니까? 나는 그들에게 허니문 기간 동안에 했어야 할 다른 것을 더 생각했어야 한다고 말한답니다. ;)

캐 시를 숨기는 사람들게서 가장 중요한 것은 캐시를 숨기기 전에 캐시를 찾아보라는 것입니다. 물론 지오캐싱 가이드아니을 읽고 이해하는 것도 필요하겠지요. 한국에서는 그런 염려는 없을 것 같습니다.  이들 가이드라인을 번역해 놓은 수고에 감사드립니다.

 

* 한국캐셔들에게  직접적으로 할 말이 있을 경우을 대비해서, 지오캐싱코리아닷컴의 회원이 될 의향은 없는가요?

지 오캐싱코리아 웹 사이트와 조직에 가입하는 것이 언어문제 때문에 어렵지 않을까 합니다. 나는 이 사이트를 지켜보는 것이 즐겁습니다. 물론 사진과 함께 올라오는 후기를 보는 것도 좋습니다.  지오캐싱 아이디와 얼굴을 대조해보는 것이 즐겁습니다.


* 리뷰어는 어떤 자격심사를 거쳐서 되는가요?  그 과정을 설명해 줄 수는 없는가요?

* 지오캐싱 역사에 변화를 줄 만한 가장 최근의 계획은?

없습니다. Not really(실제로?). 지오캐싱은 항상 변화하고 있습니다. 이번주에 있었던 한국의 시도 지역의 추가에 대해 알고 있으시죠. 뿐만 아니라 지오캐싱닷컴의 외부에서도 항상 어떤 새로운 일이 생겨나고 있습니다. 아이폰에 있는 지오캐싱 어플리케이션과 같은 것 말이죠? 한국에도 애플 아이폰을 사용하고 있나요? 저는 하나 있습니다. 이것을 이용해서 몇 개의 캐시도 찾았구요. 비록 가민을 더 좋아하긴 하지만 말입니다.

*Crow-T-Robot은 누구인가요? 사람인가요 로봇인가요?

그는 기계입니다. 농담이구요. 그는 멋진 사람입니다. 한번정도 그와 지오캐싱을 함께 나간 적이 있습니다. 그와 나는 FTR(First to Review)를 위해 경쟁합니다. 실제는 그렇지 않습니다. 가끔 그가 먼저 리뷰를 할 때도 있고 때로는 내가 먼저 할 때도 있습니다. 종종, 같은 시간에 같은 캐시를 리뷰할 때도 있습니다.

* 끝으로 한국의 캐셔에게 특별히 하고 싶은 말은?

당신들 모두 정말 대단한 그룹으로 보입니다. 당신들을 함께 일하고 있는 것이 즐겁습니다. 우리 스포츠가 발전함에 따라서 약간의 썩은 사과는 불가피합니다.  캐시를 훔치는 사람, 지오코인을 모으는 사람, 다른 사람의 캐시 로그에 무례한 것을 적는 사람 등등 . 나는 한국에서는 그런 것을 보지 못했습니다. 그 한가지 이유는 당신들이 이벤트를 통해서 정기적으로 만나고 있기 때문이라고 보입니다. 그러면 당신들은 서로 다른 캐셔들을 알게되지요. 지오캐싱을 함께하고 함께 맥주도 마신 사람들 사이에서는 온라인 상에는 무례함을 찾을 수없겠지요. 당신들이 해 왔던 그대로 앞으로도 계속 하십시요!
